Following on from the Wishlist for Covers topic, I wondered who Wendy and Lisa would like to have their work covered by, and which songs would they like them to do? Also, who would W&L fans like to see them covered by?
Oh my goodness! "Stay" is my favorite W&L song & NO ONE better re-do that song... including Bette Midler ;) It's a soulful song and I don't think Bette Midler would retain it's soulfullness. Maybe Joss Stone would do it some justice?
I have often wondered whether one of their songs could be used as the underlying music for a rap song... kind of like Eminem's "Stan" and the way he used Dido's "Thank You". I'm sure at least one of their songs could, but I have not been able to come up with the one 'most likely'.
Gee, the question was asked and I shared my take. Sorry Bette's soul doesn't work for you but I love her and feel her "soul" when she sings. You kinda got to get past Bette's "From A Distance" and "Wind Beneath My Wings" past and dig a lil deeper into her catalog. She's got the soul in her..it's just not carbon copied and mimicked like Josh Stone does. (Sorry but Stone is a super sore subject with me--I loath everything she represents.)
LOL! You 'loath' everything Joss represents! Funny! Well... I haven't gotten past, Wind Beneath My Wings so if you say Bette has soul, I will take your word for it. I still just can't see her singing "Stay" though. Maybe "Satisfaction"... I'll give her "Satisfaction" ;)
Also, you have every right to share your take! Don't let me stop you...unless you're suggesting a "Stay" re-make <KIDDING>! If you want Bette to sing "Stay", then that's what you want! For me, though, "Stay" is one of those few songs that I just couldn't listen to anyone else singing except for Wendy & Lisa! That's my jam!!!!

What exactly does Joss Stone represent?
Bette Midler is a damn fine performer and singer and I agree that she could produce a fine interpretation. I also second an advisable push past the well known songs and to get into her other stuff. I always found the re-write of Dylan's "Buckets of Rain" to be highly amusing. Such a strange duet.
Well, Stone is another "enter a tv show contestant" winner who was molded by the studios and sold like a package. They will say that Stone was mentored by Betty Wright but I say Wright's endorsement was bought by the labels. She has capable chops but zero life experience to convey any emotions behind all that vocal malaise and warbling. To top it off, she straight up stole Nikka Costa's image (red hair and all). So just like "most" of the American Idol, You Got Talent, X Factor flash in the pans, her music just isn't for me.
So, I wasn't going for a laugh when I declared that, for me, Josh Stone represents everything that I hate about today's music industry. I was just waxing my thoughts.

hiya,
i can hear chrissie hynde singing "staring at the sun".......
i agree josh stone was manufactured, janis joplin wanabee, couldnt lick her boots.... bette midler is a gorg dame and could sing the phone directory.....
Hmm....how about Bloc Party covering something like Staring At The Sun? Arcade Fire covering Don't Try To Tell me? And One covering something like Are You My Baby?
In reply to my own question, how about either Bjork or Bat for Lashes covering Balloon. And Celine Dion doing Everything But You, or The Life en Francais?! Or maybe Everything But The Girl covering You & I, Level 42 with Turn Me Inside Out, especially the instrumental bit at the end?
I would love to hear ANYBODY cover a song of ours. I like it when people change the song when they cover it, like...... not re-write it, but do it in their own style!
like i'd love to hear Willie Nelson do 'Don't try to tell Me"!
Shakira do Rainbow Lake.
SideStepper could do "Are You My Baby?"
Elmo doing Balloon!! yeah.... that would be awesome.
how about PRINCE doing Staring at the Sun, or This is The Life.

hiya.......
how about Enya doing "Everafter" or "Sweet Suite".... or in fantasy land Led Zep doing "Salt and Cherries" .....Kate Bush doing "Red Bike"...... as you can tell am in love with the new album....
The only cover of one of your songs that I'm aware of is "From Now On, We're One" by Tuck & Patti on their "Dream" album. An interesting take on one of my favourite W&L songs. All around me knew things were good when I was singing that song. It was known as my happy song, and still is after all these years! Pure joy!
Theres a cover of Don't Try To Tell me by an artist that I can't remember. I used to play it on girlbros radio (unauthorized version) many many moons ago. I lost a lot of those great tracks in my laptop conversion. :pout:
As someone said before, Peaches doing Fruit At The Bottom would be awesome. But I think Har Mar Superstar would maybe be more appropriate.
Or, as I'm sitting here listening to it now and falling in love with that bassline again, how about Red Hot Chili Peppers? Even though they're fairly pedestrian now, that could so totally work.
I can't stop listening to Why Wait For Heaven at the moment, and I'm thinking TV On The Radio would do it justice. But yeah, ELMO FOR BALLOON!!!!!
My Bloody Valentine covering White Flags of Winter Chimneys
U2 covering Invisible (but in the way that Bono does where he sings a few lines of lyrics from another band's song during a U2 song.)
and the strangest one = Billy Bragg & Michelle Shocked duetting on a cover of I've Got A Big Bowl Of Cherries. Can you hear it? Can you hear his thick accent? Can you hear Ms. Shocked stirring in her wonderful voice? It's strange, but it's oh so right. Like dipping popcorn in mustard.

I think I am going to create another topic on the subject of AI, X Factor stars...stay tuned.
Back on topic: Bjork covering Viste?
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:47 am
Bjork covering Viste/Bee Sting would be very cool.
I've got XTC covering Balloon
Iggy Pop covering Salt & Cherries.
Ani DiFranco covering You and I.
Sweet Suite is untouchable. Uncoverable. Perfect as it is. Any cover would be blasphemous.
